Began playing ice hockey at the age of nine. Did learn Russian language with Russian coach at 10 as he didn't speak that language beforehand.
Offensively talented winger with great skating abilities. Good puck control and at reading the game.
Creative player and good passer. Not a very physical player with only an average shot.
Opened a bar in Riga during his playing career without managing it himself. His back is entirely covered of tattoos.
Announced the end of his international career at 33 after 2022 Beijing Olympic games... and came back one year later to drive Latvia to its first ever medal. Suddenly retired from ice hockey in November 2024... and came back with national team six months later.

Débuts au hockey sur glace à 9 ans. Il a appris le russe - qu'il ne parlait pas - car il a eu un entraîneur russe et des coéquipiers russophones à 10 ans.
Ailier talentueux avec d'excellentes capacités de patinage. Une énergie phénoménale à ses débuts en équipe nationale à même pas 18 ans. Mais même à 34 ans, il fut encore chronométré comme le joueur le plus rapide de DEL en match à 39,6 km/h.
Bon contrôle du palet et bonne vision du jeu. Joueur créatif et bon passeur. Joueur pas très physique avec un tir moyen.
Il ouvre un bar à Riga - géré à distance - pendant sa carrière de joueur. Son dos est entièrement tatoué.
15 points (6+9) en 91 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
Il annonce la fin de sa carrière internationale à 33 ans après les Jeux olympiques 2022 à Pékin... mais revient un an plus tard et conduit la Lettonie à la première médaille de son histoire ! Il prend sa retraite par surprise en novembre 2024, trois mois après avoir de nouveau qualifié son pays aux JO... puis rechausse les patins avec la Lettonie six mois plus tard.
En novembre 2025 il est fait officier de l'ordre des Trois Étoiles, la plus haute décoration honorifique lettone.
